  3. III in 1760, he became the chief instrument
  4. in the king's policy for breaking the power
  5. of the Whigs and establishing the personal
  6. rule of the monarch through Parliament. Bute
  7. succeeded his father 1723, and in 1737 was
  8. elected a representative peer for Scotland.
  9. His position as the king's favourite and the
  10. supplanter of the popular prime minister Pitt
  11. the Elder made him hated in the country. He
